Canon 40D Focusing Problems
Just a heads up for anyone looking to buy a Canon 40D. I purchased a 40D last week, took it home, slapped on a lens and couldn’t get it to focus. It didn’t matter if I used autofocus or did it manually - something wasn’t calibrated correctly (I think). Even though the image looked sharp through the lens, the photos themselves were uniformly blurry.
I called Canon for assistance and they told me to send the camera in for repairs, complete with a letter documenting the problem and printed samples that illustrated the focusing error. I just got an e-mail saying the 40D would be repaired and that I could expect to receive it in 5-7 business days.
A quick search of some other websites showed that a couple of other people are having this problem, too. If you’re in the market for a 40D, be sure to put it through its paces carefully and look for any potential problems. It’s a bit frustrating that Canon launches have been so buggy recently…

The fact that they wouldn’t just replace it outright with it only being a week old is very upsetting. Good thing i’m a nikon user
LOL
Dan,you are right. I had exactly the same issue, it was good that guys at Aden Camera in Toronto did replace the body. It was off the focus. The new one is just fine. Strange though that the first body I got was from the new shipment already, so it seems like Canon does have a quality control issue big time.
For everybody reading that, I suggest taking a shots with a couple of lenses and zoom it on LCD. If the camera is not calibrated you will have a blured image, and its gonna be more than low res of the screen, you will just feel like it does not look good.
what ever happened to your situation, I have a 40D that misses focus by 20 feet and they said is in lens, so I sent it in with lens, 40D is a little better but now lens on different body is out of focus 20 feet the other way????
I have had a 40D for several months and figured the out of focus problem was just sometihng I had to live with. Auto focus is off at any distance. If I do the live view with the 10 power viewer I can get it better, but not to the level I would expect a Canon to give. My 8700 Nikon and my XT gave sharp images. Even my little 6.1 meg Sony gives better photos. I figured I had a lemon. Near as I can tell you guys are saying it can be fixed, so thanks for the info.
My wife just got a 40D and the pictures looks awful compared to her 20D. I think it’s the same problem. The pictures are darker and lack detail, somewhat blurry.
Hi,
I am attempting to build your wonderful, inexpensive light box but need to know whether to purchase the white or clear variety or the cracked ice panel. Thanks
I just got my 40D back from Canon after sending it in because the AI Servo focusing is downright awful. I do a lot of sports photography and I can’t get this thing to get a good shot to save my life. It is completely hit or miss. My 30D did a great job. I got it back after they said they made some “electrical adjustments” and it is no better than it was before. Very disappointed in this camera right now. Guess it’s going back to Canon again to see if they can get it right this time or replace the camera altogether. I’d even be happy with a 30D replacement at this point.
My wife is on her second 40D now. Both have that exact same problem. Very frustrating.
Yep, The day I received my 40D I emailed Canon support as I suspected a problem. It has since been back to Canon 3 times and still does not take a good picture. They have it focusing better but the pictures do not look as good as pictures taken with the older 10D or the XTI. Canon keeps refusing to replace the camera. I would suggest a serions look at Nikon or some other brand as Canon QA and abiltiy to stand behind their product is going down hill.
I’m having the same problem. Got one of the very first ones in Seattle, and am amazed at how out of focus things are. Using the Rebel until the 40D gets fixed.
I had the same problem with a 40D and 24-105 f4 “L” lens. Found that the lens was not the issue. Shots were out of focus and exposure was over or under almost every time. Disgusted, I sent it back. In March I ordered a 40D with the 24-70 2.8 “L”. Camera and lens is perfect. Found others in the Oct - Dec 2007 timeframe had issues with the camera.
I had bought my 40D used and could not get a goot definition on the shots, despite the focusing seem perfect, took it to service returned with a cleaning but still the same. Yesterday got a new model and have exactly the same problem. I use the top quality setting, but can not get sharp images either in automatic or manual mode or using a stand, like I used with my former S2 IS, and even colours seem a bit washed out. Wish I had bought a Nikon. It looks as if the sensor is not located at the accurate distance so not have the chance to capture the picture accurately, despite the lenses are well focused.
I bought my 40D a week ago and went out to a volleyball game and my focusing is just like up above. Is the only solution to send it in or have you guys adjusted and settings that made it better?
Well, see what happens with my 40d. Purchased in January, used it three times. Was using it on a boat cruise one night, and started getting messages about re-inserting the battery. Did that, 30 minutes later, the battery died. Now, took it to a charity event, battery charged, got to the event, nothing. The camera is completely dead. The store swapped batteries and it still won’t start up. A real drag for such an expensive camera, and now the wait is 4-6 weeks. This is the first time I’ve bought extended warranty and I think it will pay off.
Just as well I found your site, I bought my 40D last December coming from Olympus, I thought my
lack of experience was the reason for the out of focus, over exposure weak colours. So I was
right, is the camera, how dissapointing, lets see what Canon says, probably wont even answer,
this is not America, they give you the finger here. Cheers
